At the inquest ou Joseph Born, a German chemist, who came to England to sell processes for the manufacturing synthetically of cocaine, sanotin, and nicotine, a letter was read in which ho said: ‘ I -must die by my own invention- Isn’t it funny?” Evidence was given that ho had received an offer of £2500 when ho demonstrated his ability to make nicotine, but he encountered difficulties, and had to borrow money. He wrote to the chemists with whom he had been negotiating: I am sorry to inform you that it is now too late to accept your offer. I have spent all my money. All is lost, and I and my children are threatened with being put into the street. I cannot pay ray rent or buy food. This is my last day.
