Newton pave evidence that the greatest influence which led him to come to England to give evidence was Hobbs's action in accusing him of forgery at a time when they were supposed to be friends. On beirtij cross-examined Newton said that Arthur bought his share of the proceeds of the second cheque for 600,000 francs.
