WAR MEMORIAL TENDERS. to thk editor. Sir, —Wo bog- to crave a little of your valuable space in order to acquaint the public of Dunedin with what we consider a grave injustice. Having carried out several war memorial jobs, wo felt fully justified in tendering for the Dunedin one, and wo wish you to know that our price was £BIOO, or £320 below the one accepted by the committee. The tenders were not limited to Dunedin tradesmen only, although on the surface it looks as if your committee intended it to bo so. In fact, it must have been most embarrassing to them to discover an outsider able to underbid the local firms. We say that there Is not a firm in Dunedin who could do a better job than ourselves, and being a reputable firm with considerable capital, end of good standing, we fail to understand why under these circumstances £320 of the public’s money was deliberately thrown away. As one who in his private capacity has taken a very live interest in one of yonr. public concerns, and whoso firm has supported such institutions as your Exhibition Company, we can do no other but accept the decision as A very great slight, and at least most ungenerous treatment at tho hands of yonr War Memorial Committee, Wo wonder if it occurred to them that £320 would have been a very nice contribution to some needy dependents of fallen soldiers, and we choose to sny that the committee were guilty of a breach of business fairness. In conclusion, wo can honestly say that we did not attempt one effort at “wirepulling,” although had one of our business friends been on your committee we would have felt confident of at least a straightforward deal. —Wo are, etc., Thb United Trading and MAira»Aonrßi»o Oa., Ltd., Gome. Robert Wm. M'Crcath, Manager, [The Mayor, Mr H. L. Tapley, who is chairman of the War Memorial Committee, was shown the above letter. Ho said his committee had given every consideration,to the tender of the United Trading and Manufacturing Company, and considered that it was justified in coming to a decision to accept the tender of a Dunedin firm. Mr Tapley added that there was no need to answer the innuendos contained in the letter. —Ed. O.D.T.] WORRYING OVER REMOVING?
