MELBOURNE MAN MISSING

MOTOR CAR ABANDONED. SOME CLOTHING FOUND ON BEACH. THREATS TO COMMIT SUICIDE. Preaa Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, January 7. Mystery surrounds the fate of Mr C. J. do Garis, whose name has long been prominent in connection with the unfortunate Kendenup settlement scheme in West Australia, and a number of other largo financial ventures. Ho has latterly been prominently associated with the Melbourne Subdivisions Company, which was engaged in a building scheme. On Monday Mr do Garis’s motor car was found abandoned on the beach near Mentone with some of his clothes. Subsequently pathetic letters addressed to his wife were found at his home, stating that owing to financial complications and worries he intended to drown himself. Other letters, including one to the Reconstruction Committee of the Subdivisions Company, declared a similar intention, and expressed sorrow at the losses and distress caused by the failure of the ventures. This letter says that he had decided to end the terrific burden, which had affected his mentality, with the result that ho had become a menace to his best friends owing to the warping of his financial sense and his incapacity to concentrate on work. Persistent search has so fax failed to discover any trace of Mr de Garis’s body.
