SOUTHLAND SHOW.

PEOPLE’S DAY. GREAT DISPLAY OF HORSES. (Fbok Oxm Special Reporter.) INVERCARGILL, December 10. people’s Day at a Southland Summer Show is an institution. It is the clay of all clays in the year for those interested in rural pursuits, and it is an occasion of almost equal importance for the great majority of townspeople who take a pride in their province and what it produces. Today, in the perfect weather experienced. People’s Day could not be other than a magnificent success. The consensus of expert opinion is that the 1924 fixture in every detail surpasses any previous metropolitan effort. This is gratifying intelligence, indicating, as it does, the substantial progress ftiade by the Southland A. and P. Association during recent years. At an early hour people began to pour into the city from all parts of the province to swell the crowds thronging the main thoroughfares, but the official pronouncement in that connection should prove interesting and illuminating. Visitors of prominence included Sir Joseph Ward, the Hon. G. J. Anderson (Minister of Labour), and the Hon. A. D. M'Leod (Minister for Lands). The last-named is on his first official visit to Southland, and it can be safely said that he will return to Wellington profoundly impressed by what he mis seen during the past two days. HORSES. The Southland Show, like all other provincial and metropolitan shows, has come down to a very ordinary level in regard to numbers of exhibits in draught horses, though the quality probably holds its own with any part. This year’s show has attracted the leading breeders in Otago and Southland, and the society has done well to get as much competition as it has done. The breeding classes have filled well, and in the female portion of the section some excellent classes almost of pre-war strength were paraded. DRAUGHT GELDINGS. The show of working draught horses and teams was not up to the usual in the way of competition, but the New Zealand Express Co.’s teams of geldings which have been shown at several snows from the Royal at Palmerston North, southwards, make a show in themselves, and the quality is equal to the best seen in Southland. The gate receipts were a record for the association, the total being £1257, compared with £IO9O last year. (The following is the prize list; HORSES. DRAUGHT STALLIONS AND MARES. ..Judge; Mr Alex.
