OLD NEW ZEALAND-BUILT SHIP According to a writer in the Sydney- Bulletin, another old New Zealand-built ship, after many years of good work, mainly in Australian waters, is likely to finish her days crayfishing at Westemport (Victoria). Built in this country over 40 years ago the Hawk was a finely-designed craft; from the year ’B9, when she was bought for the Port Phillip pilots, to her sale 15 years afterwards, when steam superseded sailing power, she never suffered a mishap in all the heavy weather she encountered. In those days it was sometimes difficult to put a pilot on board a vessel at all, and the little Hawk had to sail in ahead, leading the way through the channel, and then get herself out again. She never failed. CUNARD LINER MAURETANIA. The Mauretania has completed her millionth mile of steaming, having travelled farther than if she had been twice to the moon and back. The millionth mile was reached during the 305th voyage across the Atlantic, and she is now said to have steamed farther and carried more passengers than any other Atlantic vessel. She has made the fastest Atlantic passage, crossing from New York to Queenstown in 1909 in 4 days 10 hours 41 minutes. She lately made another record by crossing from Cherbourg to Now York in 5 days 3 hours 20 minutes. In 1911 the Mauretania made the record day s run of 670 knots. This splendid ship, although net now the biggest liner afloat, was at the time of her construction the largest and fastest vessel ever planned. She is 790 ft long, 88ft broad, and 80ft deep from the boat deck. To the top of her funnels she is 155 ft high, or higher than the Nelson Column in Trafalgar Square, and to the top of her masts she is 216 ft high. The Mauretania’s tonnage is 32,000, and her displacement 48,000 tons. The horse-power of her engines is 70,000. She carries 500 first-class passengers, 500 second-class, and 1300 third-class, and her crew numbers nearly 900. Her funnels are so big that a doubledecked tramcar would be able to pass through them quite easily. NEW FISHING LAUNCH. A new fishing launch, the Ballymena, do signed and built by Mr S. Carey, Port Chalmers, to the order of Messrs Wilson and M’Cosh for line-fishing at Karitane, was launched on November 27, and underwent her trial trip on Saturday, the 29th ult., with very satisfactory results, doing a speed of 7i knots. The Ballymena is 33ft overall, Bft Sin beam, 2ft 6in draught, and is the most up-to-date boat fishing out at Karitane, having selfemptying cock-pits fore and aft. The 7 h.p. Viking oil engine was installed by the local firm of Walter Morgan (Ltd.), and proved itself up to the firm’s usual standard of engines, being of .the finest finish and workmanship. Both the local firms have been congratulated on the success of this boat.—10.12.24.
