MINIMUM LIVING WAGE.

Carr Saunders, Professor of Social Science at Liverpool University, lecturing on the standard of life, said that scientific investigations showed that the minimum for a family of five in Great Britain ought to be £5 2s 4d a week, made up of 26s 3d for food, 8s lOd for rent, 11s 3d for clothing, and 4s for fuel, leaving 12s for personal requirements and recreation. —A. and N.Z. Cable. THE NUMBER OP UNIONS. SCHEME FOR REDUCTION. LONDON, December 6. The General Council of the Trade Union Congress has appointed a sub-committee to evolve a scheme for carrying out the resolution of the Hull Congress in favour of a reduction in the number of trade unions, in order to present a united front for the improvement of the workers’ standard of life. It is hoped to reduce the 1135 unions affiliated to the congress to 50 or less.—A. and N.Z. Cable. SUBSTITUTE FOR BEEF. LONDON, December 7. The Trades Council is considering the introduction of reindeer meat owing to the dearness of beef.—Sydney Sun Cajile.
