NAVY LEAGUE ESSAYS.

■RESULTS OF COMPETITION. _ The results of the Navy League competition are given below. The examiner, Mr John N. Stewart, reports as follows: f'lt is pleasing to find that the number of‘ Scholars and of schools taking part has increased considerably—the number of schools from 126 to 141 and the number of fessays written from 5045 to 5775 (approximately). The number of essays submitted was 961 as against 826 last year. I have no means of comparing the essays of this year with those of previous years, but (I may sa-f that I was greatly pit used with the quality of the work. 1 expected to . find much similarity among the essays, particularly among those of the same scbjqfoi, but I found that even among the juniors the language and arrangement of the! matter showed that the pupils to a great extent employed their own methods. The; majority of the junior essays consisted of details, as was to bo expected, but many seemed to be impressed with the beauty of King Alfred's life and showed a (real appreciation, if a juvenile one, of fai^’‘character and work. The senior subjest was well handled, and the essayists showed a wide grasp of the subject, going beyond the immediate causes and the detaJli.of campaigns. Some, especially girls in '- - the' higher forms, gave free play to their imagination and seemed to identity themselves with tho times about which they wore writing and to appreciate their inheritance.”
