GENERAL NEWS.
The monthly meeting of the Kaikoral School Committee was held on Saturday last, when the head master reported that the roll was now 607, with an average attendance of 677, that proficiency and Junior National scholarship examinations were over, and the school examination would shortly be completed. It was decided to <ilo3o the school on Thursday, December 18, and to reopen on February 3. The sum of £3l lls 6d had bo far been collected for the prize fund. Messrs Holden and MTntosh were appointed a Works Committee with authority to carry out necessary improvements during vacation. A successful social was held in the Labour Club’s Rooms on Saturday night, the hall being well filled. Those who contributed were Mrs Ward (pianoforte solo), Mr Taylor (songs), Mr Neileon (recitation), and Miss Alva Pearce (fancy dance). Dancing was indulged in between the items, Messrs Ward,. Pearce, Brundell, and Downes supplying the music. The chairman announced tnat on December 20 a children’s night would be held and that the proceeds from next Saturday’s social would bo applied towards buying pre sents for the children. The monthly meeting of the Dunedin Athemcum Committee was held last night, when Mr J. M. Paterson presided. It was reported that 98 volumes had been added' to the library since last meeting; that 23 new members had joined the institution; and that the following presentations had been received:—The Official Year Book of the Commonwealth of Australia for 1924, and volume 55 of the Transactions and Proceedings of the New Zealand Institute. It was decided to order 15 new works recommended by the Library Committee; also to obtain four new publications for the reading room. It was further resolved that the library be closed for the holidays on December 25, 26, and 27, and on January 1 and 2; also that the reading room be closed on Christmas Day _____
