VICTORIA DEFEATS ENGLAND. A SENSATIONAL FINISH, WON WITH A MINUTE TO SPAKE. Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, November 19. (Received Nov. 19, at 7.50 p.m.) Victoria defeated England 'by six wickets. Tho weather was dull and muggy when play wag resumed, and tho attendance was fair. Tho wicket was good. Alayno (55) and Woodfull (54) faced Kilner and Gilligan. When he had added one to his overnight scoro Mayno should have been rim out, but Whysall fumbled tho ball. Alayno then cut Kilner for two. Woolley was absent owing to an injured knee, and Chapman was fielding as substitute. Whysall caught Woodfull off Gilligan’s first ball in tho third over. He had been in for 97 minutes. The crowd were urging the batsmen to hit out, and Lidciicutt drove Gilligan for two and was then clean bowled. Tho batsrnon then wont after tire runs. Hartkopf throw himself in, having a close shave, but adding live to tho score. Ho then square cut Gilligan to tho boundary. Mayno lifted Kilner to tho fence and got into the seventies. With an hour to go, and 88 runs required to win Freeman in tho slips at last caught Mayno, who had given a stylish, chanceless display during his 167 minutes at tho crease. Amidst barracking from the crowd against wasting time Ilarlkopf and Hendry bocamo aggressive. Douglas was bowling tho log theory, but tho scoring mounted rapidly, and Victoria won with one minute to go amidst wild excitement. Scores : ENGLAND.
