THE PUBLIC SERVICE.
CLASSIFICATION AND REGRADING. FAVOURABLE COMMENT. (Fbom Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, October 30. Favourable comment is made in the Public Serviie Journal just issued on the recently issued classification list and tho regrading of the Public Service l . "We believe that the Public Service Commissioner," states the Journal, "has consistently endeavoured to be fair to the Public Service, and where he was convinced that an improvement in tho scale was merited has granted it in whole or in part, having regard to tho limitations of the public purse. In some directions, however, tho association considers that the commissioner has not gone far enough, and we are particularly disappointed with his failure to raise the maximum of Class VII in the clerical division, and to provide for a substantial increase for the prisons' officers to cover the long hours worked. No increase has been made in "the minimum salary for married men, nor has a definite salary been fixed for an officer of 21 years of age, but we cannot altogether hold the Public Service Commissioner fully responsible for these two lacks, because both would require a determination by Cabinet." A long list of improvements and the increases in salary is given. It is not likely that the Appeal Board will sit until December at the earliest.
