WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Waihcmo County Council was held at Palmerston on Saturday, there being Crs A. Murray (chairman), W. Rilrtuo, E. Hose, J. S. Miller, W. Freeland, G. Clark, H. O iNerll, and J. O’Connell. The council passed a motion of sympathy with Cr M’Callnm in his recent- bereavement, and adjourned for five minutes as a mark of respect. A deputation waited upon the council in regard to tire proposed change in- the postal service-in outlying districts. —It was decided that meetings be called in the localities concerned, and that a petition in the matter be circulated. • Tho Inspector (Mr M’William) reported that general surface work, alteration to culverts, formation of Saltwater Creek road to stables, Bushcy Park, grading and cleaning water-tables on Bushey road, and work on Horse Bange road, and Busbey road had been carried out. In Goodwood Riding general surfacing, and work on culverts and ditches, raking, in and blinding metal on Goodwood Settlement road and crossing at Brooklands had been done. General surface work had been done in Meadowbank Riding, and maintenance gravel placed in several potholes between Glenpark and Meadowbank siding. Water-tables and culverts, and metal had been attended to on Taieri Peak road. in Bunback lading general surface work had been done and maintenance gravel placed in a few bad potholes. A few loads of gravel had been spread at Wilcox bridge corner, and attention paid to a plank at Tile’s crossing. The culvert authorised near M’Lews’ house had been put in, and grading of Pagan’s and Guffie'a roads, and the road from Ballingail’s to Horse Range road attended to. Factory and Mill roads had been graded, and part «f the road - near Pagan's crowned up, and maintenance gravel spread. In Green Valley Riding surfacing woik had been done, ana maintenance gravel spread. The roads and crossings were in fair order. In Macraes Riding general surfacing had been done onthe Moonlight road, jiydc road, and Four Mile road.—Tile report was adopted. Mr F. W. Pile wrote asking when tho work of rebuilding a bridge across the river leading to his property would be put in hand. — Received: the matter having been partly attended to. The Public Works Department wrote that inquiries had been mane as to when tho Main Highways Board would be in a position to issue monetary authorities for the expenditure of grants on highways. In regard to items taken over, from the department, the. board hari power to issue .authorities immediately. New works would have to bo provided for out of loan moneys raised under section 12 of the Main Highways Act. The board would be unable to issue authorities until the Estimates had been passed by Parliament.—Received. The Main Highways Board notified that tile following principles had been laid down: —Tho board would carry out at its own cost all engineering and land plan surveys of deviation in alignment, that were wholly outside tho existing road reserves. It would contribute £1 for £1 towards cost of all engineering and land' plan surveys of deviations, practically wholly within existing road reserves, agreement as to such work to be approved by the board. It would contribute £1 for £1 towards the coat of compensation for land,-new fencing, shifting fences, severances, and other expenses of a like nature precedent to the legalisation of any deviation not declared a Government road; the agreement and work to be first approved by the board. The board reserved the right to enter into negotiations concerning the compensation direct.—Received. A communication was received from a resident of Nenthorn complaining of horses and cattle wandering and causing damage. —Received. The Otago Hospital Board wrote in effect that amounts levied would have to be paid quarterly by the last day of each quarter in the financial year—namely, June 30, September 33, December 31, and March 31. —The arrangement was regarded as satisfactory. The Tanmaranui County Council wrote requesting the AVaihemo Council to pass a- resolution in support of payment of half of all revenue derived from the sale of timber to the counties from within whose boundaries the revenue was derived.—The request was agreed to. The council declined to declare gorse and broom noxious weeds. It was resolved that all ratepayers be notified that Hospital rates must paid within one month from date. In connection with tho allocation of Land Fund, it was resolved that .£9 16s be allocated to Taieri Beak road,, and £2O to Cosey Dell, road. Accounts amounting to £397 were passed for payment.
