SIR JAMES ALLEN.
HIS QUALIFICATIONS AS HIGH COMMISSIONER. ARPRECIATORY REMARKS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, August 16. Commenting upon the extension for a further two years, of Sir Janies Allen’s term of office, The British Australian- and New Zealander, dated August 14, remarked: “ The extension will be gratifying to hie many friends in this country, as well as adyantageous to the dominion. During the five years, or thereabouts, that Sir James has been in London, he lias enjoyed the advantage of working with the same Government at home, and one with whose policy he is very intimately acquainted, having had a large share in making it when ha was Minister of Finance, and also Minister for Defence in the Government of which Mr Massey is still Prime Minister, and ActingPrime Minister himself during Mr Massey’s absence in England. This advantage Sir James Allen has not failed to use for the benefit of his own country and the Empire generally, which has availed itself of his services on the British Empire Committee, and in various other ways. ” Two things arc of first importance in qualifying a man to till the responsible position of a High Commissioner eificientmly: first, high standing in the community ho represents, and thorough knowledge of it; and. secondly, experience in dealing with tho men, the questions, and the interests most closely affecting hie own dominion. Sir Jamea Allen is particularly well equipped in the first particular, and we are glad that the extension fo his term enables New Zealand to make further use of the very valuable experience of men and matters on this side of the world which he has acquired during his first term of office.”
