SIXTY YEARS AGO. FROM THE Otago Daily Times. “ Inveniam viam aut faciam.” TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1864.
In the Lake District tho river still continues low, and mining is prosecuted with energy and success. There is every reason to believe that the yield of gold is increasing, as in addition to th© low level of tho rivers tho thawing of the ground has enabled many claims to be worked which have been for some time past at a standstill. At the Cardrona the miners are making fair wages. The isolated position of the Head of tho Lake calls for the attention of tho Government. A pedestrian match was run off yesterday afternoon, at Vauxhall grounds, between Dan. Arkingstall (professional) and Fred. Wain (amateur), the distance being 300 yards and the stake (verbally) £SO a side. Over 200 persona were present, despite the unfavourable weather, and Arkingstall seemed the favorite until just before the start when a change approaching a “Derby mystery” occurred. Just on the winning scratch Wain pushed in front by half-a-dozen inches. To tho majority present the contest seemed far from satisfactorily struggled for, and, although the course was certainly a small circle, the time made, a long 29 seconds, was anything but first-class podestrianiam.
