OTAGO HARBOUR BOARD.

ENGINEER’S REPORT. Mr M'G. Wilkie, engineer Otago Harhour Board, reports as follows: Dredge 222: During the month of Angust, Dredge 222 lifted 11 loads or 9163 cubic yards from between Piles 28-29, 8 loads or 6604 cubic yards frojn between Piles 5-6, 4 loads or 3332 cubic yards from the Vulcan’s pit, jL load or 833 cubic yards from the entrance to the Vulcan’s pic, 22 loads or 18J526 cubic yards from between Piles 6-7, making a total of 46 loads or 38,318 cubic loads for the month. Of this material 35,819 cubic yards were deposited at the dredge Vulcan, and 2499 cubic yards were deposited at the Heads. During the month the dredge steamed 455 miles and consumed 178 tons of coal. Since the annual overhaul the dredge had been working very satisfactorily. Dredge Vulcan.—During the month of August the Vulcan pumped 36,652 cubic yards of material received from dredge 222 into the Lake Logan reclamation area. Since the annual overhaul the Vulcan has been dealing with very heavy material deposited by Dredge 222 in a most satisfactory manner, pumping over a distance of 3500 ft to the most necessary areas required for the Exhibition buildings. Docks. —During the month of August two vessels were docked in the Otago dock and three vessels in Port Chalmers dock. The Otago dock was pumped out once for drainage purposes, making a total of six pumps for the month. Drainage was dealt with by draining pumps while docks were occupied. The electric engine was running two and three-quarter hours lifting mast ashore and aboard s.s. Walhora. Dock boilers were opened up for Govern-! ment inspection and cleaning. Necessary repairs carried out to safety valves, Stop valves, check valves, and blow-down cocks, new stay put through centre stay tube, new blow-down pipe fitted and circumferential seam welded in bottom of low wing boiler. No repairs on other two boilers. GENERAL. Ravensbourr.e road.—This work was started on September 1, and arrangements are being made to obtain stone from the top quarry at Black Jack’s. Twenty-fonr chains of formation, sufficient to lay the railway tracks on, have been completed, and the crossings, etc., altered. Goat Island Quarry.—For a period of three weeks ended August 25 a total of 1000 cubic yards of stone was quarried a» Goat Island. Of this material 940 cubic yards were deposited on the half-tide wail and 60 yards on Boat Harbour walls. The quarry was closed down on August 31, and ; all the men and plant were transferred to Ravensbourne. Channel Piles.—Channel Piles Nos. 8 and 22 red, which were knocked down by passmi g steamers, wore drawn and re-driven. Portobello Wharf. —One mooring pile was renewed, and some small general repairs effected. Company’s Bay Wharf. —Some small repairs were carried out to this wharf. Locomotive.—The locomotive underwentannual survey, a new cab was erected, and three new smoke tubes put in the boiler, and the locomotive is now in first-class running order. Birch Street Wharf. —Deck beams and caps were replaced where necessary, when shipping permitted the work to be done. Wharves and Sheds. —The usual maintenance repairs to wharves and sheds were effected. Longer pins were put in the mooring pile? on Victoria wharf to prevent the shijj’s lines slipping off. Gear Shed.—The walls of this shed have been completed, the storey posts and central beam have been placed in position, and a start lias been made on the erection of the roof principals. D Shed.—Thirty piles varying from 36 to 54 feet have been driven for the foundations of this shed. ’ Slip.—One box punt and one of ih^Vulcan’s punts have been slipped for cleaning and repairs. | Pilot Boat.—The pilot boat has been slipped for cleaning, painting, and annnal overhaul. A new propeller has been fitted to her. ;
