GENERAL NEWS

A successful social was held in. St. Mary’s Hall, Mornington, on Wednesday last, the occasion being the anniversary of St. Mary’s Chuorh. There were about 160 people assembled, and present members and their friends, and a very popular programme was arranged. The stage was nicely decorated by the Ladies’ Guild Among the performers who rendered items were the following;—Mr M. F. Robilliard. ’cello; Mr J. W. Turnbull, mandoline; Miss Hilda MacLaohlan, recitations; Mr o W. Hannar, song; Mr Ted Morris, song; Mr Craigie, song. Dances and games wore indulged in, and the evening was enjoyed by everyone. Mrs Beattie made an efficient accompanist. Refreshments were handed round about 10 p.ra., and full justice was done to the assortment provided by the ladies. The vicar, the Rev. S. J. Cooper, spoke a few words suitable for the occasion, and thanked the performers and those responsible for such an excellent programme. At the close of the evening cheers were called for the vicar, Mrs Cooper, and Mrs Beattie, the accompanist. The duties of M.C.'s were successfully carried out by Messrs G. L. Scott and J. W. Hepworth. Higman; pianoforte solo by Miss Kathleen Wheelan; trombone solo, ‘.‘Eily M«vourneen,” Mr Horace Inder; quartette by Messrs Whitburn, Scot.tr, Franklyn, and Clarke; B bass solo, “Rip Van Winkle, Mr L. Fogo; cornet solo. “Answer,” Mr A. ’Whitburn; song. “Killarney,” Miss P. O’Neill: cornet solo, “Broken Dreams,” Mr D. Scott; euphonium solo, “An Old German Air,” Mr M. Clarke; cornet solo, “Sweet Spirit, Hear My Prayer,” Mr E. Franklyn; B bass solo, “Asleep in the Deep,” Mr L. Fogo; quartette, “Auld Lang’ Syne,” Messrs Whitburn. Scott, Franklin, and Clarke: God Save the King. Miss Kathleen Wheelan played the accompaniments. On Wednesday evening the annual meeting of the Palmerston and Waihemo Caledonian Society was held in the Comity Chambers, Palmerston, for the purpose of electing the officials for the ensuing year and arranging for the forthcoming sports. The results of the elections were as follows: —Patron, Hon. E. H. Clark, M.L.C.; president, Mr D. Hoes; vice-president, Mr V. ,T. Callaghan; treasurer, Mr T. Pickett; secretary, Mr W. M. Crockett, jun. In connection -with the jubilee celebrations of the Caversham Presbyterian Church, the Sunday school children, about 200 in number, spent a very pleasant afternoon in the reserve close to the church on Saturday. A number of games were played, and the children engaged in races. Afternoon tea was served, and from 2 p.m. to (! p.m. the children spent a very happy and enjoyable time. The arrangements were in charge of the senior young men's Ilible class, who were assisted by the Sunday school teachers. A number of parents and friends were present, and took a lively interest in the proceedings.
