The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was always very warmly supported by Queen Victoria. When the society decided to give medals in recognition of special acts of bravery in saving the lives of animals, the design for the medal was submitted to the Queen. A little later the society received a letter from the Queen’s secretary, saying that, as there was no cat included in the design. Queen Victoria had drawn one herself in the position in which she wished it to appear. The oat still appears upon medals issued bv the society.
