N.Z. AND SOUTH SEAS EXHIBITION.

The weekly meeting of the directors] of the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition Company was held last night, and was attended by Messrs J. Sutherland Ross (chairman), C. Speight. T. Somerville, Peter Barr, A. Barnett, H. L. Tapley, W.- It. Hayward, and H- F. Sinoock.

The Chairman and Mr Speight Were authorised to sign the lease of Logan Park from the Harbour Board on behalf of the directors.

The Chairman reported that they had made a start at Mosgiel the previous night with their country campaign. The meeting, though small, had been very enthusiastic. The press had given an exceedingly good report of the meeting. There was no doubt that they had made a very good start with their country propaganda. He would ask the meeting to pass a vote of thanks to Mr J. P. "Walls, Mayor of Mosgiel, for the assistance he had rendered. Mosgiel was now forming a local committee.—lt was decided to send a letter of thanks to Mr Walls. It was decided to accept the invitation of the contractor for the Exhibition buildings to make an official inspection on Monday next. The directors will be entertained at luncheon by the contractors. A letter was received from the Canterbury Progress League stating that a special committee had been set up to arrange for a special Canterbury exhibit.—Noted. The reports of the Fine Arts and Publicity Committees, which dealt with a number of formal matters, were approved. LAYING THE FOUNDATION STONE Mr Tapley said that, subject to Lord Jellicoe’s approval, the foundation stone of the Exhibition would bo laid at 2.30 p.m. on Monday. October 13. He would like this ceremony to bo confined to one hour. The civic farewell to his Excellency would take place at the Octagon Hall immediately after. His Excellency was to be entertained by the Freemasons on the Saturday night. He did not know whether the Freemasons desired to have any ceremony at the laying o£ the foundation stone.—Mr Tapley was thanked for his statement. NEW ZEALAND COURTS. After a length discussion, it was decided to embrace the secondary industries in_ a New _ Zealand Court and the primary in dustries also in a New Zealand Court. . FINANCE COMMITTEE. The report of the Finance Committee, which dealt, inter alia, with the matter of fire insurances on timber and buildings in course of erection, was adopted. MUSIC COMMITTEE The report of the Music Committee read, inter alia:— “ Honorary Accompanist.—After consideration, it was resolved that the position bo re-advertised, with the addition that an honorarium of £SO be stated in the advertisement. Mr Gravestock.—The Chairman (Mr D. Phillips) informed those present of Mr Gravestock 1 s appointment by the directors as Commisioner of Music and Entertainments Department. Band.—A cablegram from Sir James Allen stating that the Naval Band was not available, and that the Air Force Ministry was being approached. was received. Promenade Concerts.—-The Chairman stated that he and several other members of the Music Committee had met at Mr Anscombe’s office, and had carefully studied the plana of the concert hall. It was resolved that the following recommendation be' made to the directors; \Shelter verandah on either side of the festival hall be erected for the storage of ground floor seats; the estimated cost being £125.” ‘‘A sub-committee was set up composed of Dr Galway. Dr Hall, Messrs A. Fels, E. C. Reynolds, and R. Bennell to consider and report on the matter of works to be selected for the Exhibition Choir.” Tire report was approved. WORKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee’s report as follows, inter alia: — “Applications for the position of working overseer were submitted by the sub-com-mittee, and after consideration it was resolved that W. Duncan be appointed at a wage of £8 per week. The architect was instructed to draw up a schedule of duties. The weekly report from the architect was read and received. The chairman (Mr J. S. Douglas) reported that the subcommittee had met Mr M. Stevenson and made all necessary arrangements in connection with the contract for bringing down and spreading clay. A letter was read from, the Town Clerk stating that the City Council were willing to lend the Wolf Harris fountain for display purposes during the Exhibition, the architect to confer with Mr Tannock regarding the most suitable location for the fountain in the Exhibition grounds. The Chairman-reported that the sub-committee had met Superintendent Nanier and Mr Crawford in connection with the fire prevention service, and that Mr Napier would submit a note of what was required. The Architect reported that h© had called in at the Burnside tannery and that Messrs Bayley and Son had stated that they could save up 400 tons of tan in 12 months. Resolved that Messrs Bayley be asked to keep the tan for the company. The works in progress were inspected.” The report was approved. MOTOR COMMITTEE. The Motor Committee’s report read as follows, inter alia:— “Correspondence to and from Mr Cousins, general secretary New Zealand Motor Trade Association, was read, and it was left in chairman’s hands to interview Mr Cousins. It was also suggested that a formal invitation be sent to Mr Cousins asking him to come \to Dunedin and go into the matter of motor exhibits at some suitable date after the return of Mr Spence, secretary of Exhibition, from Wellington, about the 27th inst. As recommended bv the directors at their meeting of the 2§th ult., the matter of inviting persons outside the motor trade to become associated with the committee was discussed, and it was resolved to recommend two names to the directors—Mr A. E. Ansell and Mr J. H. Stewart (Milbum Lime Company).” The report was approved.
