A provisional contract for the building of 40 miles of standard gauge railway connecting Lake Taupo with the Main Trunk line at Kakahi. has been signed by Cammell, Laird, and Company. The contract will bo confirmed after Mr Hiley (the former General Manager of the New Zealand Railways) has reported on details of the work. Ine new lino will .be an important feeder for the Main Trunk. CHRISTCHURCH, September 6. The Hon. G l . J. Parr (Minister of Justice) announces that ho contemplates using 10,000 acres of light Crown lands in the North Island for a new Borstal institution. CHRISTCHURCH, September 7. Tho handsome new West Christchurch District High School on Hagley avenue, was opened yesterday by tho Hon. C. J. Parr (Minister of lulucatiqn) with due ceremony. ’Hie Minister said that the new building was one of it.e finest eduentio nl buildings in Now Zealand and he was profoundly satisfied with it. Ho did not at first favour day labour, but the new huildi, g was a cheaper job and a more faithful y<o than would have been done by contract. Tho Education Department was satisfied with the result of day labour at West Christchurch. Ho congratulated the Educarion Board and tho district on the .new building.
