The Kittawa, from Westport, via Bluff, which arrived here yesterday, is to sail tomorrow for Timaru, Westport, and Greymouth. The Kakapo, with a cargo of guano from Walpole Island, via Bluff, arrived here yesterday. She is to complete discharge at Timaru. The Opihi, from Westport, via Lyttelton and Oamaru, is due here to-morrow, and is to sail on Wednesday for New Plymouth and Nelson, via Oamaru, Timaru, Lyttelton, and Wellington. The Gale is to sail to-day for Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, Picton, and Wanganui. The Whargape is to sail to-day for Oamaru, .Bluff, and Sydney. The Flora left on Saturday night for Oamaru, Timaru, Lyttelton, Napier, and Gisborne. The Navua sailed on Saturday for Wellington, Picton, and Auckland. ■ The Wingatui, from Auckland, via Wellington and Lyttelton, is due here to-morrow to load for Oamaru, Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, and Auckland. The Union Company’s intercolonial passenger steamer Moeraki is expected to leave Melbourne on Wednesday for Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin,- Bluff, and Melbourne. Due here on September 18, she is scheduled to continue her voyage the same day. THE WEST CAHOKIA. The Swayne and Hoyt Lin© steamer West Caßokla, from San Francisco, is due at Auckland on September 12. On completion of her discharge at New Zealand ports, she will proceed direct to Java, and will later 10ad cargo at Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin, and Bluff for Sourabaya, Batavia, and Samanang. THE CANADIAN CONSTRUCTOR. Th© Canadian Government Line steamer Canadian Constructor, from Adelaide, is due at Bluff on Friday. Due here on Saturday or the next day, she will load her© and then proceed to Timaru, Wellington, and Auckland to complete taking in cargo for New York, Boston, and Montreal and inland prints of America and Canada. GENERAL BOTHA FROM TEXAS. *■ Advice has been received stating that tho Steamer General Botha, is ’ now on her day to Wellington and Australian ports from iffew York and Port Arthur (Texas) with case oil and general cargo. The vessel is expected at Wellington about September 20. -MOTOR SHIPS BEATING STEAMERS. . c s ..According to published statistics, a larger tonnage of motor vessels was launched on the Clyde in June than of steam vessels, ■whilst a much larger proportion of the new contracts were for vessels equipped with internal combustion engines. It is understood this has never before occurred on the Clyde. AMERICAN SHIPS IN JAPANESE TRADE. During the calendar year 1923, a total of 756 American ships, aggregating 4,026,787 gross tons, entered Japanese ports, as com; pared with 2,527,787 tons in 1921 and 3,421,618 tons in 1922. American ships constituted 11 per cent, of the total tonnage in 1923, and ft, per cent, in 1921. Japanese shipping comprised approximately two-thirds of tho aggregate shipping entering Japanese porte in th© foreign trade, while British shipping constituted more than one-sixth in tho last three years. -■ WITHIN WIRELESS RANGE. SULPHUR FROM SICILY. The steamer Glentworth, 5677 tons, is en route from Sicily with a cargo of sulphur for discharge at Melbourne* and New Zealand ports. The vessel sailed from Sicily on August 8, and is expected at Auckland about th© middle of October. Some 4500 tons of sulphur will bo discharged in New Zealand —about 3000 tons being for Auckland and the remainder for Lyttelton. MELBOURNE-LAUNCESTON SERVICE. The Union Steam Ship Company has been advised that the Tasmanian Steamers Proprietary will resum© tho summer running tvith the steamer Loongane in the MelbourneLaunceston service early next month. The Loongana will make three trips a week each ■way, leaving Melbourne on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and Launceston on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. PROJECTED 32,000-TON MOTOR LINERS. ..The vice-chairman of tho United States Shipping Board recently stated that two new 83,000-ton liners would bo constructed, and that they would be fitted with Diesel machinery under 25,000 h.p. In the new 11',000-ion motor liner for the Messageries Maritimes, which is now being bhilt ot the Chantiers De France, Dunkirk, in which Sulzer machinery of 45000 b.h.p. will be fitted, the new type of Sulzer airlWfl injection Diesel engine will bo used for auxiliary purposes. There will be four df these, each with four cylinders, developing 250 b.h.p. at 300 r.p.m. This will represent the largest installation of this class of oil engine. C. AND D. DINE STEAMERS. En route from London with general cargo, the C. and D. steamer Port Caroline is due at Auckland at the end of this month. The vessel, which is coming via Suva, will proceed to Lyttelton to complete discharge. She will load Homeward from New Zealand during October, and will sail finally for London early in November. The Port Auckland is scheduled to leave Liverpool on November 8 for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin.
