A great success was the verdict of the larr ~ number of people whq attended the Hard-v - and Fancy Dress Social held on Wednesd; evening in Kroon’s Hall by the ■( DanderrInstitute.' Many and varied were the cci tumes ■worn, and with over 80 entries, tl '■ judge's task in deciding prize-winners was i. :■ easy one. Prizes were awarded as follows;Children's section: . Girl’s fancy costumeMis® Edna Fincha.ni; boy’s‘fancy—ManU Childs, boy's hard-up—Master . Earner Audits: Lady’s fancy costume—Miss I, Sum ncr; 'Men’s fancy, Hr b ted mail; lady'; hard-up—Mrs M’Carthy; men's haird-up, -M. Hamilton. The president, Mr A. Robinson, in 'presenting the prizes, congratulated tht prize-winners on the appearance of then costumes, and the members generally <m th“ very successful-evening and tho sapid .advancement of the club. A short community sing, national dancing by the children, c graceful exhibition of the fox .trot (latest steps) by Miss Winnie Robinson and Mr. T. Williams, a song by Master Childers, and impromptu “stunts” by several of the characters, added to the evening’s enjoymept. Tho accompaniments and dance music were capably supplied by Miss Wilson and Messrs' Clarke, Chisholm, and S. Harbrow. MessrTurner, Alexander, and Brockett were in ciiarge of the dance hall.

The North-East Valley Branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union held a successful bring and buy social on Saturday last in the North-Elast Valley Bowline Pavilion. The proceedings were opened in the afternoon by the Rev. George Miller, quite a good gathering being preseftt. The stalls presented a good display, Useful gifts of all kinds having been contributed and stallholders h,-id a busy time disposing of them. Afternoon tea /was passed round, and a happy time was spent. In tho evening r good programme was provided. ■ Items were contributed by the followiing:—Pianoforte solo, Mies Rigby; vocal solos, Mrs Medlir. and Mias Davis; vocal duets, the MissesLennox and the Misses Turner; violin solo, Mrs Attwel; recitation. Miss Benfell; tableau, Presbyterian" Bible Class; saxophone. .Mr Beadle, and items by Mr Hutton’s string orchestra. . During the evening, the president (Mrs Peart),. as, chairwoman, thanked all those who had so kindly assisted. Supper was provided, and as practically everything for sale had been disposed of, tV committee . was left ‘with; a .satisfactor balance in. hand. The. singing of the National Anthem, brought 1 a pleasant and. successful evening to a close.

A.O.F. Court Little John held its. fortnightly meeting on Tuesday. C.R. Bro.' W Reynolds presided over a large aftendahe; of members. Official visits were receive; from Courts Woodland’s Pride and Excelsior. Invitations to the 47th anniversarof Court Excelsior and a social evenin' Court Enterprise were accepted, and arrangements made for the visit to Court Pride ■c ■ the Leith on the occasion of, its diamoru; jubilee meeting. One candidate was writ’ a ted by the C.R. and P.C.R. Bro. ( Reynolds; The toast of the visitors wc,■> responded to by P.C.R. Sister WiUiamaoii (Woodland’s Pride); and G.C.R. Bro. Morri son, the later remarking that the largattendances of this court were evidences c the- kindly feeling that existed betwee: Courts Excelsior and Little John. Card: and other amusements were provided and ' short programme of dancing brought a morenjoyable evening to a close shortly after 3 j p.m.

Dunedin City Lodge, No. 4430. G.L.E., Royal Antedeluviar, Order of Buffaloes, met on Tuesday, Primo G. F. Ward presiding over a large attendance including visitors from Otago No. XLodge and Royal Athene Lodge, Fort Chalmers. One candidate war initiated, Primo G. F. Ward officiating. Primo F. D.Vautrey presented the lodge with a handsome set of gauntlets, and was accorded a hearty vote.of thanks. Primo M Faigen, Alderman of Benevolence, reporter, that Bro. Webster, of Havelock Wilson Lodge, London, who visited the lodge last week, had since met with a fatal accident on board his ship at Port Chalmers. The report was Deceived with regret, and the brethren stood in silence while* the city minstrel played the Dead March.
