DA,RING ATTEMPT FAILS. A CHASE IN THE DARK. (Peb United P«ess Association.; AUCKLAND, August 25. A daring attempt was made last night to blow open the safe of Hancock and Co., brewers and spirit merchants. One shot was fired in. the large safe, but failed to open the door, though the lock was shattered. The smaller safe was found plugged with gelignite, but the charge was not fired. The police wore informed that a man was hanging round the doorway of the offices. When they went to investigate the man ran away, and, having a long start, vanished in the darkness after being chased for some considerable distance.
