“TIPPING” ON OVERSEAS STEAMERS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— The reference which a Blenheim resident makes to the practice of “tipping” on Homo liners, as reported this morning in the Daily Times, is quite amusing, and 1 only wish it was based on facts. I have been on the New ZealandLondon run for many years and been considered a good worker, but I have never yet struck so generous a patron as your Blenheim contributor, neither have any of my confreres on board. We are glad to receive an average allround “tip” of 20s per head nr 30s for a couple first class, but on no account are wo allowed to solicit, and woo betide ns if wo neglect the passenger in any manner of way. In other classes “tips” are correspondingly smaller. May I say that on the Atlantic nm of five, or six days a firstda=s steward gets anything from ill to £5, and generally a pat of recommendation. He usually acts a? valet and all-round hnndv man to a passenger, the same as on the Ixmdon-New Zealand run.—l am, efc., Bedroom Steward. August 26.
