A singular advertisement appears in the Southland papers, cautioning the public against purchasing certain large blocks of land which, according to the definition, appear to include a great portion of the Middle Island . . A meeting of agents of insurance offices was held yesterday afternoon, at the office of Mr Henry Houghton, Slafforcl-strcot, for the purpose of discussing matters connected with the great fire in Stafford-street. Thoro were present Mr Chalmers, of the New Zealand Office; Mr Turnbull, Australasian; Mr Webb, Northern; Mr Maointyro (Morison, Law and Co.), Royal; Mr Houghton. Otago; Mr Skinner, Victoria; Mr Brodrick, Liverpool and London. Tho absentee agents were Messrs Cargill, North British and Mercantile; Messrs Dalgety and Co., Imperial; Mr G. Murray, London and Lancashire. Mr Houghton was voted to the chair. Mr Chalmers moved —“That it is absolutely necessary, in order to maintain unanimity amongst the offices, that a fixed principle be acted upon with regard to the payment of expenses incurred for tlie purpose of preventing the spread of fire; and that in order to carry out this resolution it is necessary that each, agent shall use his best endeavour to induce the Company he represents to agree to tho above.” Mr Turnbull moved tho motion which was agreed to unanimously. . .
