MOSGIEL SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

Mr M'Garin oy presided over the monthly meeting of the Mosgiel School Committee last night. There was a full attendance of members. Mr H. Swallow wrote offering a trophy m the form of a cup or similar article tor the school football team. —Received with thanks. The Education Board notified that in reference to the committee’s letter the amount of subsidy due to the committee in connection with the purchase of books was £4. Bs. The amount would be remitted to the committee’s credit alter the board meeting, August 20.—The letter was received. The Defence Office, Dunedin, wrote re garding the behaviour of Territorials and cadets at the school grounds, instructions had been given to see tliat all trainees left the school grounds immediately the parades were dismissed.—The letter was received. Mr Dallas, sports master at the school, applied for a refund of half fares for the boys taking part in football matches this season, the total being £3 6s Bd.—The request was agreed to. It was also decided to write and thank Mr Dallas for his good work with the school team, and to compliment him and also the boys on the success achieved. , . The Head Master reported that the attendance for the month had been fairly satisfactory. The roll number was 310. During the month Mr Roydhouse had completed his annual inspection of the school, and had reported most favourably, two of the standards gaining the coveted Excellent. Inspectors Robertson and Lynskey had also completed their annual examinations of the school, ‘but the report was not yet to hand. Arbor Day had been observed on August 21 when a fine selection of deciduous trees had been planted round two sides of the <tround, and a number of ornamental shrubs fn the’school garden. Mr Robert Aitken had presented a valuable weeping ash, and ho suggested that Mr Aitken bo thanked for his gift. He had much pleasure in intimating that the football team had won the cup for the best team in the competition. Now that the laying put of the garden was proceeding, he would like the boaid to be urged to proceed with the erection of the boundary fence as soon as possible. He had to report that Miss Russell had been absent on sick leave for close on a fortnight, and that Miss Tithcr would not, us anticipated, resume duty at Mosgiel.—The committee expressed pleasure at the fact that the attendance had improved. Thanks were expressed to Mr Aitken for Ids gift of a tree for arbor day. It was decided to mark the boys’ success at football in some way, and details were left to a sub-oommit-toe. Several members of committee offered help to this end and were thanked for their offrs Th Works Committee drew attention to some minor repairs that required attention.— It was decided that the matters be attended to.

The Visiting Committee gave a very favourable report on the school. The children had displayed a vast amount of energy and appeared healthy and happy. There appeared to be the happiest of relations between tiie teachers and pupils. The school garden was making fast strides towards completion.—The report was received.
