The largo number cf guests present a very pleasant time playing bridge in the drawing room or ping-pong in the hall and dining room. » * * • The Dunedin section of the New Zealand Bank Officers’ Guild (Inc.) held their annual ball in Tudor Hall on Thursday, 21st inst. About 70 couples were present, among those present, being Mr. Mrs, and Miss Matheson, Mr and Mrs Hammond, Mr and Mrs Myles, Mr and Mrs Angel, Mr and Mrs Bone, Mr and Mrs Thompson, Mr and Alias Hartmann, together with a fairly representative number of the staffs of the various banks. The arrangement were in the capable hands of Mr and Mrs Barling, and gave the utmost .satisfaction to all present. * * * As a wind-up to Miss Wallace’s dancing classes, the John APGlashan <'oilego held a most successful dance on Friday evening in Balmacewon House. The bovs’ common room and the adjoining library were cleared for dancing, while supper was laid in another large room, all the rooms looking very bright and gay with flags and foliage and the college ribbons. Mrs Gilray received the guests on their arrival. The usual dance programme was varied by a ribbon dance, slinper dance, “Excufjo Me" dance, etc., ait of which added to the amusement, of the young people. As the close the head prefect called on the bovs for “throe cheers for Miss Wallace,” followed by a haka. • * « On Thursday evening Mrs James Roberts held a bridge party at her residence Montpelier. Soring bulbs made effective decorations in the rooms, and the hostess was charmingly gowned in pale grey moire with an over-dress of silver lace. The guests present were Misses Graham, Stock. Edmond. T.ndv Ferguson, who wore a smart black frock and hat and a short fur coal, war presented bv Airs O’Neill, on behalf of the Gardening Circle, with a beautiful pale pink bouquet, the flowers of which - had been crown at the homes of Airs Lee Smith and Aliss ATartin. The club room wa» beautifully decorated for the occasion with lavender irises and crocuses, and yellow crocuses and jonquils, interspersed with maindenhair fcm. During the afternoon songs were rendered by Airs Wilson n nd Airs Wakefield-Holmes, and Miss Holland recited, Lady Ferguson, in a charming little speech, thanked the ladies for their kindness to her, nnd, with a wish to see them all again on her return, bade them “goodbye.” On Friday night the students of the Home .-science Faculty of the Otago University met at Studholmc House to bid farewell to Miss Olga Gloy, who has been a warded a Rockefeller Foundation Scholarship, and is leaving for Columbia University. New York. The hall was decorated with greenery and spring flowers, and (ho supper room looked very pretty with wistaria. hangings and streamers of pink and mauve. Gaily-coloured streamers, with the club’s colours (red and bluet predominant, and costumes of varied lined blended to give an air of gaiety to the scene, and the 60 couples present were unanimous in voting the function an undoubted success. Schcrek, M'Lcan, Jennings, Taploy, etc. » * « A quiet but very pretty wedding was solemnised at the Presbyterian Manse, Ovyaka, on Wednesday, August 20, when Miss Bessie Brown, daughter of the late Robert Brown, of Oamaru, was united in the bonds of matrimony to Mr Angus O. Hugo, only son of Mrs Hugo, of Oamaru. The Rev. J. C, Paterson, M.A., officiated. Iho bride looked charming in a blue charmeuso satin frock, with rodium lace panels and sleeves. She wore a coronet of blue and lemon flowers. A pretty posey of primroses completed a most effective toilette. After the ceremony the party adjourned to the dining room, where the toasts customary to such an occasion wore duly honoured. The happy couple left by motor for Balolutha, en route for Queenstown, where they intend spending their honeymoon. • * • On Saturday evening last the showrooms of Arthur Barnett (Ltd.) took on quite a now complexion. The occasion was the annual dance given to the staff and their friends by the directors of the firm, charming frocks and crowns being displayed on living figures instead of the customary racks and inanimate effigies, usually .associated with a showroom. The whole place was beautifully decorated—flowers, pot plants, and coloured streamers making an absolute transformation. Well over 100 couples were on the floor, and in a carpeted alcove six card tables wore placed for the benefit of those who were not dancing. ' Supper was served in the salon upstairs, Mr Armstrong, of the Strand, personally supervising the arrangements. Indeed, midnight came all too quickly. The directors themselves were present, and during supper opportunity was made for an exnression by Mr Lawn of the genuine appreciation the staff felt for the thoughtfulness displayed in providing such an excellent evening’s fun and pleasure. A special “memento” box of chocolates was presented to Mrs M. F. Barnett. Mrs Arthur Barnett, and Miss Grant from the employees. Mr M. F. Barnett, of Christchurch, in thanking the members of the staff for their remarks and for their presents to the ladies, mentioned that it was the combined loyalty and consistent endeavours of the assistants that had made i>ossib!o the “record” year just closed, and- added that they, as directors, wore amply repaid for. their part in entertaining the stuff b" the evident enjoyment of everybody present.
