OTAGO RUGBY UNION. The weekly meeting of (he Otago Rugby Football Union was held last night, tho president (Mr 11. H. S. White) occupying the chair. Tho Secretary reported that a telegram had been received from the Canterbury Rugby Union, which stated that a stateuiont in the press to tho effect that the Otago Union had approved of the appointment of Mr A. Eckhoid as referee for the Payne Trophy match to be played at Dunedin on Saturday, was incorrect. The Canterbury Union later wrote staling tbat it was agreeable to uie appointment of Mr Eckhoid os referee.—lt was contended by Mr Nelson that the match should be treated (ho same as representative games, and that the names of the six- referees available for representative matches should bo submitted to both teams. —It was eventually decided that tho secretary hand ihe six namos_ to tho managers of the Old Boys and University Clubs’ teams. . . Tho Primary Schools’ Tournament was commenced at ' lnvercargill to-day in perfect weather. Canterbury defeated South Canterbury by 25 points to 5, and Southland scored 51 points against Otago’s 4. The final games will bo played on Wednesday, when Southland will play Canterbury, All tho visiting teams will travel north on Thursday morning. Although defeated, the, Otago boys played a. great uphill game against boys nearly a stone heavier and very much faster. Both bucks and forwards tackled well, but the exceptional pace of the homo team Jiad Otago in difficulties from the start. At the end of the first spell Southland had scored 21 points, but in tho second spell play was more even. On several occasions tho borne line was in danger, but weight told. A feature of tho game was the fine dribbling of the Ota-go forwards, who one and all worked to the finish. Of the backs, Trovethan and Oottam played best, but they had few opportunities of showing their attacking anility. Otago’s score was a splendid goal by Inglis from just outside the Southland 25. On Wednesday, Otago will play South Canterbury, when an even game. should result, tho Timaru boys being the next lightest team to Otago in the tournament. INTER-COLLEGIATE TOURNEY. Christ’s College defeated Wellington College today by 18 points to 9, and thus won the Inter-Collegialo Rugby Tournament. Tho teams wore fairly evenly matched. The standard of play was below that of some previous tournaments. Christ’s led by 13 to 3 at half-time. TECHNICAL COLLEGES AT PLAY. (Psn UMirn-.n Punas Association.! CHRISTCHURCH. August 25. Christchurch Technical College defeated Invercargill Technical College to-day by nine points to nil. HIGH SCHOOLS’ TOURNAMENT. The final matches in connection with the High Schools’ Tournament will be played at Carisbrook this afternoon. At 1.30 p.m. the Christchurch and Southland High Schools will play off, and at 5 p.m. the final between tho Timaru and Otago High Schools will be played. Both games are expected to provide good exhibitions of Rugby. These young players piny fpst, open football, and are not afraid to throw tho ball about Air R. M’Konzic will act as referee at 1.30, and Mr G. M’Kcnzio at 3 p.m.
