GENERAL NEWS.

The Dunedin Butchers’ Union held a most successful social evening in Kroon’s Hall on Wednesday evening, there being 70 couples present. The following contributed to the programme; Misses Wilson and Smith and the Oroho Orchestra. Miss Brittell made an efficient accompanist. During the evening Mr Brittell thanked all those who had assisted in the evening's entertainment, and explained that the object of the meeting was to bring the members of tho union and friends together in social intercourse. Ho stated that similar meetings would be held during the season, and expressed his pleasure at the large attendnace, and hoped that all present would spend an enjoyable evening. Dancing was carried on until 11 p.m., Mr Smith supplying the music. Mr Brittell, in addition to acting as M.C., was responsible for all the arrangements, and his efforts were highly appreciated by all present. An origine.l entertainment was given in the Town Hall, Green Island, on Thursday night by the Returned Sodiers’ Association’s pierrot troups of entertainers. The largo hall was well filled by an appreciative audience, and every item on the programme was well received, encores being tho rule of tho evening. At the interval tho Mayor thanked the performers, and hoped that that would not he their last appearance in Green Island, and that their next entertainment would be at no distant date. A programme cosmating of songs, duets, quartets, sketches, recitations, and a grand operatic finale was given, the following taking part; Messrs Harvey, Massey, Smith, Webber, J&Connell, Luckhurst, Wheelwright, and Barnett; choruses were also given by the company, and a good orchestra provided two overtures. At the close of the function the Green Island branch of tho Dunedin Returned Sodiers' Association entertained the performers and a few friends to supper.
