Under the Main Roads Bill, now before the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, all the revenue from motor taxation, which is to be considerably Increased, will be provided for the work of the Main Roads Board. The duty of the 'beard (writes our Sydney correspondent) will be to assist councils in the work of constructing a wellorganised system of main highways, with the object, primarily, of developing the vacant lands of the State, of feeding the railway lines with traffic, of giving settlers access to wharf or rail, and of providing facilities for modem motor traffic. A subsidy of not less than £IO,OOO is to be voted by Parliament each year for the metropolitan main roads, and of not less than £90,000 for country main roads. A later measure will make provision for the increase of motor taxation, chiefly, it is believed, in respect to ’buses and other motor vehicles plying for hire. Simmons, was dispatched in a crate from MangataJii by a conveyance due to arrive at its destination at 6.30 (states the Hawke’s Bay Tribune). The vehicle, however, materialised without its living freight, and it transpired that, when some three miles on the road, the driver noticed, with amazement, a red deer cantering along in front of him, investigations showing that the enterprising deer broke through the crate and regained her freedom. AH efforts for her recapture had been futile, and she was still at large in the Maraekakaho district. She was said, however, to be very tame, and that she would follow Mr Simmons like a dog. Mr Simmon s anticipated no difficulty in getting her home again.
