GISBORNE-NAPIER RAILWAY.
EARLY COMPLETION URGED. (Per United Press Association.) GISBORNE, August 23. A meeting was held this afternon of business and professional men and farmers' representatives to discuss the question of . urging the Government to expedite, the completion of the Gisborne-Napier railway. It was stated that the Minister had promised to continue the work when the other railway works were completed. These were now finished, and it was considered advisable to remind the Minister of his promise. It was pointed Out that. a deputation would leave Wairoa and, join the Napier deputation, proceeding to . Wellington to interview the Hem. Mr Coates, and it was urged that Poverty Bay should join with' the other delegates to 'visit the Minister. , : After a lengthy discussion, in which . it was stated that the time for the construction of the East Coast railway was long overdue, it was decided to send a deputation representing all the local bodies in the district, and also tho Chamher of Commerce, Farmers’ Union', and Slveepowners’ Federation, to join the other delegates to interview the Minister. It was also resolved that the delegates should first proceed to Napier to discuss matters with the other delegates and urge support for the inland route for the railway to 1 Gisborne, but if no agreement were reached, that the delegates be urged to support the route which the Government decided best. It was further resolved to urge the Minister to complete the survey between Napier and Gisborne immediately, and to complete the work by contract. '
