If one may judge by the largo audience which assembled in the North-East Valley Hall on the occasion of the fifth annual cqnccrt of tile United Band of Hope the interest in temperance work among the young is growing. The retiring president, the Rev. S. Morris, occupied the chair, and during the evening gave a short address. He also introduced the newly-appointed president, Mr Corlett. Xho programme consisted of the following;—Pianoforte duet, Misses Bruuton and M'Donald; pianoforte solos— Emily Rigby and Lena Henderson; vocal duets —Stewart and Alan Batting, Jack and Willie Roberts; solos —Louvain M'Donald, Francis Grace, and Angus Brown; recitations —Miss Benfell, Marion Einnie, Isabel Barron, Doris M’Laughlan, Sam Law, Sydney Peterpon, and James Moore; character sketch, Sam Brown, dialogue, Baptist scholars; tableau, Presbyterian girls. An appeal song, “Please Give Me a Penny,” was sung very nicely by Effis Reekie, ■practical appreciation of this item being shown by the number of coins thrown on the stage. A very successful concert was brought to a close by the singing of the National Anthem. The monthly meeting of the executive of the St. John Ambulance Association was held on Wednesday evening, the Rev. V. 6. Bryan- King occupying the chair. A considerable amount of time was devoted to discussing the recent Oriental carnival, the result of which being considered highly satisfactory. The cliairman specially commended the work of Mrs G. M. Baker, on whose shoulders most of the burden had been borne, and moved 4,hat the association place on record its high appreciation of the invaluable voluntary services of Mrs G. M. Baker in connection with the recent carnival, and recognise that the great success achieved was mainly due to her self-denying efforts. The motion was carried enthusiastically. On Die motion of Mr T. C. Coull a cordial vote of thanks was accorded by acclamation to all tbe ladies and gentlemen who had asssisted. Eulogistic reference was also made to the services of the secretary. It was decided to call immediately for tenders for an up-to-dyte motor ambulance, considerable information having already been gathered regarding the most suitable type of machine. It was rciiortod that the motors ar present in use had answered 103 calls during July, tlio distance involved being 538 miles.
