TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL.

Tho monthly meeting hold yesterday was presided over hy <’r (Tunics liudlay (chairman). There was a full attendance of members, with tho exception of Cr Scott, who waa indisposed. 'J'ho Finance Committee reported that the expenditure had boon £1537 16s 7d and recommended tTiat, accounts be paid, The receipts had totalled £ll2 19s 9d. The bank book showed a debit balance of £6446 11s 6d.—Adopted. Tho sanitary inspector reported that tho slaughter houses in the county and the piggeries at Green Island were in a satisfactory condition.—Received. The Hanger reported having impounded 10 head of cattle during the month.- Received. Tho Tecommondaitious of u! u> engineer regarding several roads in the county (published m his monthly report yesterday) were all agreed to. in connection with No. 2 (Bald Hill road). Cr Mathcson pointed out that Waikoimiti County Council had agreed to give £2O towards work on this road, as lie was a large ratepayer in tho area concerned. A plan was placed before tho council asking for its consent tu the land coloured pink on the plan being portions of a larger area set apart and reserved as a market square being added to, and to form part of, Brighton Domain.—Held over for one month. Tho Mosgiel Borough Council wrote in regard to repairs to Silverstream banks, in support of the request some members of tho council were in attendance. Hie deputation pointed out that the Borough Council was prepared to help with tho work to tho extent of one-third of tho cost up to £ICO, provided the Taieri County Council kept the bed of the stream clear in future and would prevail upon the Presbyterian Church Board of Property to see that their tenants kept tho banks clear of noxious weeds ami rabbits and prevented cattle wandering on the banks, by having all fences secure. Tho deputation also pointed out that at present carters who wore removing the gravel from the stream bed were damaging tho borough streets, and that it was only reasonable that the county should pay over a portion of the royally received from gravel taken from alongside the banks adjoining the borough towards the repair of their damaged streets and tho future upkeep of the bank along the borough boun-dary.—-After a lengthy discussion it was decided that the county would fall in with the borough’s offer, spend an equal sum of flood damage repair money, keep the bed of the stream clear, and that tho chairman and the Mayor wait on the Church Board of Property regarding tho stipulation that the bank he kept clear of rabbits and gorso, and the fences so preserved that cattle could not damage tho banks.—Regarding the borough council's suggestion that portion of the royalty' on the gravel bo paid over to tho borough,*a good deal of discussion took place, but no definite decision was reached in the meantime. The Minister of Internal Affairs forwarded a copy of tho Motor Vehicles Bill, 1924, and invited comments on same.—Resolved to reply that the council raises no objection to the taxing part of tho Bill, but it has a decided ©ejection to so many important matters with regard to motor traffic on roads being loft to Ordeis-in-Couneil, as every driver of a motor vehicle should receive and have ©very facility of knowing tho actual law ; this suggestion to bo passed on to tho Now Zealand Counties’ Association. The Chairman Main Highways District Council forwarded copies of memoranda from tho main board in regard to surfacing, alignment, and bitumen works, etc. Received and noted. Rickard Bolting wrote stating that the Railway Department had always attended to the ditch at East Taieri that the council had drawn his attention to.—A copy of tho letter to bo sent to the Church Board and tho Railway Department. The Town Clerk, Green Island, advised that the estimated cost of laying out footpath on Brighton road was £125. His council had accepted the county’s offer of £1 for £1 up to £IOO total cost.—Held over to enable tho member for tlio riding to Lo present. Tho Town Clerk, Croon Island, notified that tho engineer's esiimato for forming and 'metalling Armstrong’s road waa £216 IBs 9d. He would bo pleased to receive tho county's suggestions and intentions thereon.—Hold over to enable tho member for the riding to bo present, Frod Cuff wrote in regard to fencing across the old road at Hatelie’s slip, and erecting gate on deviation road. Ho had leased the top part of his farm. The member for riding and engineer to inspect and report. Thomas Finnic and nine other ratepayers petitioned that the road loading from Kaikorai Dagoon to tho old Brighton road bo opened up for traffic.—The member for riding and engineer to inspect and report. A. E. Hammer asked permission to make an otriranee to a garage he intended to erect on his section at Seaview, Brighton.—Member for riding and engineer to report thereon. John Graham, Hindon, wrote in regard to steep pinches on road that had just been formed to his run (Sweetwater Track). —Road only formed 7 feet wide, and not intended for ciray traffic. Council had no further money to spend in the meantime. Mrs M. A. Deaker, Button, asked for repairs to road from main road past Mr E. J. Dochorty’s to her gate. She would help with the work. Ten to 15 yards of gravel to bo put down if the petitioner agrees to do the carting. Cr MTntosb brought up the matter of survey of land taken for road purposes in Mr W. Lobb’s property at Brighton; but the council decided not to accept any liability. On Cr Mathoson’s motion, the engineer was instructed to do some neceesary work to M‘Rao Bros.’ road, Strath Taieri. Tenders wore dealt with for the delivery of 609 tons of metal in Outram riding, and that of Fleming and Son accepted. At the close of the ordinary business the council sat as members of the Maungatua and Outram Domain Boards and transacted a considerable amount of routine business.
