YESTERDAY’S PROCEEDINGS (Abridged from Press Association telegram.) LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. WELLINGTON. August 21. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m. to-day. LEAVE OF ABSENCE. One week’s leave of absence was granted to the Hon. E. H. Clark on account of illness. STAMP DUTIES. The Hon. O. SAMUEL moved his morion proposing tho restoration of the exemption from stamp duties on mortgages, but after discussion complied with the request from Sir Francis 801 l that tho motion be withdrawn. After the Women Justices Bill had been discussed (a report, of which appears else; where) the Council rose at 5.20 p.m. until 2.30 p.m. to-morrow. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. The House met at 2.30 p.m. THE GOVERNOR-GENERALSHIP. Replying to Mr Leo Mr MASSEY said he had no intention of recommending some citizen of New Zealand for the GovernorGeneralship. lie mid the list of eligible nominees in Great Britain was not nearly exhausted, and ho expected within a few days they would bo notified that a most suitable appointment had been made. SUMMER TIME BILL. On the motion of Mr SIDEY the names of tho Hon. A. T. Ngata. and Mr Tau Honare wer ■ added to the committee which is considering tho Summer Time Bill. CHELSEA SUGAR WORKS. A lengthy discussion arose when Mr HARRIS brought down a report of the Industries and Commerce Committee, which stated that the committee was of the opinion that in the interests of the dominion the Chelsea Sugar Works should remain open. (A full report of the discussion appears under a separate heading.) The House rose at 0.16 a.n. till 2.30 p.m. to-morrow.
