AMERICAN NATIONAL, DOUBLES. AN AUSTRALIAN SUCCESS. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. NEW YORK, August 20. Patterson and Wood l beat Washburn and Williams 6—l, 4—6, 6—3, 3—6, 6—o. In the first set the Americans were decidedly off their form. The Australians were perfect overhead and accurate in pace and length. In the second set the games went with the service until Patterson lost the fifth and the Americans led 3—2. Williams lost the service with the sixth, game, and Wood with the seventh, and the Americans won the set, Williams scoring with his famous cross-court placement. In the third set Patterson’s serving and overhead smashing were deadly. By breaking through Patterson’s service in the fourth set the Americans created a 5 3 lead, and won the set. In the fifth set an extremely cold wind made the conditions unfavourable. The Australians fought hard to a 4—o lead. Then Patterson won the fifth with overhead placements. Washburn lost the service with the sixth.—A. and N.Z. Cable. (Received August 21, at 9.50 p.m.) The Kinsey brothers overwhelmingly defeated Snodgrass and Westbrook 6—2, 60, 6 —2, thus confirming the conclusion of observers that the French will probably not prove very serious Davis Cup doubles contenders.—A. and N.Z. At the recent Wimbledon tournament Williams and Washburn reached the final of the doubles championship, in which they were defeated by their countrymen Richards and Hunter.

A DEFEAT AVENGED. NEW YORK, August 20. (Received August 21, at 7.15 y.m.) At Chestnut Hills Hunter and Richards, avenging the defeat administered in -July, defeated Brookes and Sohlesinger o—2, B—6, s—s.—A. and N.Z. Cable. Shortly after the arrival of Brookes in America’, Brookes and Schlesinger defeated Hunter and Richards 4—5, 11—9, 6—2, B—6.

THE MIXED DOUBLES. NEW YORK, August 20. (Received August 21, at 9.20 p.m.) In the mixed doubles Miss Cole and Schlesingor defeated Miss Gitm and Helm 6—l, 6—3, and Miss Wills and Richards defeated Miss Jacobs and Kalins 6—o, 6—3.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
