LEAGUE FOOTBALL.
ENGLISH TOURING TEAM. WEST COAST BADLY BEATEN. (Per United Press Association.) GREYMOUTTI, August 13 The English League team to-day defeated the West Coast representatives by 65 points to 8 on a muddy field in the presence ot between 5000 and 4000. The weather was fine, and a wind was blowing downfield. The visitors monopolised the ball and recorded 16 tries by a series of spectacular passing movements. Playing with the wind in the first spell, the visitors led by 24 to nil. The local forwards were good, but the backs were too light, and by constant kicking played into the hands of the visitors, who scored with monotonous repetition. Sullivan converted eight tries, and Mooney and Pollard one each. Soon after the start Rix scored from Sullivan’s pass. Tho hall passed from Hui‘" combe to Rix, who passed to Evans, the latter scoring. Hurcombe, Ilowley, and Evans each handled the ball, and Pollard scored. Mooney, Bowman, and Reece joined in a passing movement, and Reece scored. Hurcombe transferred to Pollard, who passed to Rix, who scored; and after good play by Mooney, Hurcombe, Evans, and Pollard, Rix again scored After changing over Thompson dribbled through and Bennett scored, Tho Coast rallied, Moars dashing across, and then Mouatt bullooked his way over, the same player converting. Mooney, Evans, Howley, and Hurcombe joined in a passing movement, Brough scoring. Evans got across soon after. Sullivan,- Bowman, and Reece passed well, and Brough scored. Pollard scored from a passing rush. Reece intercepted and Hurcombe scored. Passing after a long kick resulted in Hcwley scoring. Mooney broke through and Howley again scored Rix scored the final try. Mouatt and Mears were the best local players. THE LEAGUE GAME. DUNEDIN PLAYERS ENROLLING It is stated on authority that 29 Dunedin senior players and one junior player have enrolled with the local secretary of the Rugby League, ’lt is expected that a match between Otago and Canterbury will be played this season at Christchurch, and there is also a possibility that a North Island-South Island match and a. Queens-land-South Island match will bo played at Dunedin.
The League people have pencilled dates for the use of tho Caledonian Ground on throe Saturdays in October.
