(Received July 31, at 10.20 p.m.) Questioned in the Assembly regarding the release of ex-General Maritz, the Prime Minister (General Hertzog) said it was clear to him that so long as Maritz remained a prisoner a feeling of bitterness would prevail rightly or wrongly among tens of thousands of persons, A.ll realised that Maritz had done wrong, but they must all agree that the sooner h© was released the sooner it would put an end to that feeling of bitterness. Now that the European War was over—now, as never before in its history—South Africa should be made to- feel that the Dutch and English should stand together and should end the friction of the past. He added that ex-General Maritz had not been granted a free pardon, out merely & remission of his sentence. ~Reuter. .
