ASTRONOMICAL NOTES FOR AUGUST.

THE SUN. 'Tho Sun’s path during the month of August will bo through the constellations of Cancer and Leo, in R.A. from 8.45.26 to 10.37.49, in north declination from 18.1.57 to 8.39.19, and in longitude from 128.65.29 to 157.46.40. An eclipse occurs on the 2Sth, invisible in Now Zealand, but visible over Northern Asia. THE MOON. The phases of the Moon will be as follow ; First quarter Bth 3.11 p.m. Full moon .- 16th 7.49 a.m. Last quarter ... ... 22nd 8.40 p.m. New moon ... 30th 8.7 p.m. Perigee 12th 7.24 a.m. Apogee 24th 5.12 a.m. THE PLANETS. Mercury will be in R.A. from 10.19.4 to 11.40.51, and in declination from 10.53.9 north to 2.34.53 south. It will be in conjunction with the moon on the 2nd and on the, 31st, in aphelion on the 13th. at its greatest elongation on the 14th, and stationary on the 28th. Venus will be in R.A. from 6.11.5 to 7.33.50, and in north declination from 17.40.53 to 18.15.56. It will bo at its greatest brilliancy on the 6lh, at its greatest hek, lat. south on the 12th, and in conjunction with the moon on tho 25th. Mars will be in R.A. from 22.36.33 to 22.11.6, and in south declination from 15.33,7 to 18.10.56. It will bo at its greatest hel., lat. south on the sth. in conjunction with the moon on tho 15th. in perihelion on the 30th, and in opposition to tho sun on the 23rd. Jupiter will be in R.A. from 16.34.12 to 16.37.46, and in declination from 21.28.7 to 21.41.12. It will be stationary on the 6th, and in conjunction with tbo moon on the 9th. Saturn will bo in R.A. from 13.41.56 to 13.60.1. and in south declination from 7.59.1 to 8.51.40. It will bo in conjunction with the moon on the 6th.
