ART IN DRESS.
Tho first of the series of lectures to business girls on dress and clothing was given don Wednesday night at the Home Science Building at the University. Professor Strong, in introducing Miss M'Gill, *"© lecturer, said that she, had given special study to the subject, and even in the United States, where much attention is devoted to the artistic aspects of dress and clothing, Miss M'Gill was an outstanding teacher oil the subject. Miss M'Gill gave a delightful lecture, referring to the importance of dress as a moans of self-expression, and the influence, of suitable, clothing on one's outlook. She gave amusing examples of tho effect on an individual of wearing dresses suitable or unsuitable to particular occasions. She showed a series of pictures illustrating tho development of fashions from the Egyptian and classical civilisations, through the middle ages to modern limes, often placing modern styles immediately after early styles, to emphasise the recurring appearance of certain characteristics. It was comforting to eee that distortions of the human figure had a short life, and that in general it was tho beautiful adaptations that reappeared in modified form. Miss M'Gill then gave briefly the underlying meaning of the direction of the line in drapery, indicating the, occasions when certain lines were more effective than others. She also showed with practical examples the sheet of different shapes pf. the neck lines of a. dress, according to the type or build of the wearer. She ended with comments or. the choice of colour and colour blending, showing examples of successful colour combination. There- was a good attendance, but it was not as crowded as it had been hoped. The lecture was so specially informing and so full of interest that it is hoped that more girls from business houses will attend.
