“A MISNAMED SPORT.’ TO THB EPITOB Sir, —I fail to observe any comparison •whatever between a man taking up a change of work and the converting of a dumb animal from a natural to an unnatural gait by leg-hoppling, not to speak of the additional cruelty it may be subjected to if it docs not take kindly to the “straps.” Notwithstanding the plausible remarks of “Close Watch,” it cannot bo reasonably argued that because (he trotting horse is not now so necessary to city requirements as heretofore, and because the number of trotters in comparison to pacers is so small (due to the majority of them being converted to hoppled pacers), and because some people like bopped-borse racing, the present state of trotting should remain so palpably unsatisfactory. Of what utility use is the hoppled horse? None whatever. Totalisator permits were granted to encourage and improve the truo-gnited trotting horse, linked up with clean sport. It behoves our political representatives who are not conversant with these sporting matters to attend some of the race meetings and view for thcmsolve.s the “machine horse” spectacular races, the winning places in many of which are pre-arranged. If the pacer is to be allowed to compote with the trotting horse let it dp so on ecpial terms—i.c., free-logged. This would surely be a fair deal. Trotting officials would still ,fmd enough to do to prevent corrupt practices which, on their own showing. they have failed to do in the past, and which they will never succeed in doing whilst the hoppled horse is permitted to compote in public races. —I am, etc., ’Wide Awake. Donna Teresa Dolores Della Villa Franca is about to appear in her celebrated trapeze act. Voice from the gallery : “Bo careful now, Biddy, darhn’. .Sure iv ye was to fall and hurt yersolf ye’d break yer ould mother’s heart.” For Children’s Hacking Cough, Woods' Great Peppermint Cure.—Advt.
