GILBERT AND SULLIVAN.

ANOTHER “SAVOY” STORY. By Constant Reader. Is there room for another book about the Savoy operas? The Stock authority on the subject of Messrs Cellier and Bridgeman’s bock on “Gilbert, Sullivan and D’Oyle Carte.” In addition there are Mr Percy Fitzgerald’s “The Savoy Opera and the Savoyards”: Mr Wallhrook’s “Gilbert and Sullivan Opera”; and Mr Lytton’s “The Secrets of a Savoyard” to say nothing of numerous biographies and book of musical criticism dealing with the personalities of Gilbert and Sullivan respectively. Despite all that has gone belore, Mr S. J. Adair Fitz Gerald succeeds in giving a now interest to “The Story of the Savoy Opera” (Stanley Paul; 5s net), and this largely because of the very fine senes of illustrations which accompany the hook Mr T. P. O'Connor contributes a chatty introduction to the book, and its author, who being a “fellow Irishman” and a distinguished and veteran journalist, comes in for warm eulogy. Mr O’Connor is a Gilbert and Sullivan enthusiast. lie writes: 1 am one of the survivors of those who wore present at the first night of “The Mikado” —to mv taste tbo best thing thev ever did 1 saw “Trial bv Jury”—their first big stiwess I have seen all (heir pic'cs, and f want to see them all again.
