OTAGO EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Otago Education Board was continued yesterday morning, and was attended by Messrs J. Wallace (chairman), G. W. Wood, U. 11. S. Todd, G. K. Graham, L. Sanderson,.. G. Mr John E. Ryan, attendance officer, reported as follows I 1 have to report for tho month ending 21st inst. that the oilv and suburban schools re-opened after their ivinter vacation cn 17th inst. with a very good all-round attendance, the only exceptions being the schools affected by illness of pupils. Unfortunately diphtheria has affected one of the south-end schools considerably. There are to date 12 families affected by it. In the majority of cases it has been the younger ■■'members of tho families in question who are. not ’of school age who contracted the trouble. The “contacts” in the various families affected are from 30 to 40 pupils. There are also two or three cases of scarlet fever reported from the north-end schools. In these cases Uio children affected are not of school age. The country schools re-opened on Tuesday, 17th inst. Accounts amounting to £24.333 10s 2d were passed for payment. The Architect recommended ihe construction of a Sloping gangway at each door of the infant department of the Albany Street School; cost £36. —Approved.' The. Architect recommended (a) that a new post and wire fence with netting and six plain wires be erected between (he Mosgiel School ground and Mr Bacon’s properry, tho latter to be asked to pay his share; (h) that the erection of new outoffices of up-to-date pattern for the girls be undertaken as soon as possible, also a slight alteration of the boys’ out-pffices.— It was stated that tho cost of the new outoffices, in brick, would be £43o.—Both recommendations wore adopted. Tho Architect reported that ihe alterations at Uie teacher’s residence at tho Wakari School—extension of dining room — would cost about £B2.—The application was declined. The Architect recommended (a) ihat tho painting of tho interior of the gymnasium at the Mornjngton School be authorised on a subsidy basis, tho board and the committee each to c. Tribute two-fifths, and tho department ono-fifth, of the cost, estimated at £35. (b) Minor repairs to Standard 1 room and gymnasium, new cords for windows, repairs to locks, outdoor seals for the infant room, total cost about £6. —Tho recommendations were adopted. Tho application from Purakauiti Committee for logging-up and fencing the school glebe, estimated cost £36, was held over. Tho Balclutha Committee forwarded an application from the residence of FincganU for tho conveyance of the pupils from that locality to the Balclutha School.—Tho sccrotajy reported that some 14 children were affected.- It. was decided to call for tenders for the conveyance of the childr-" the chairman to have power to accept a tender if he considered it reasonable. An application was received fortho starling of the Hooper’s Inlet School in tho oli school building. A roll of seven children was anticipated, and the. residents would guarantee £BO per annum and would board (ho teacher free.—Tim Chnirni-n: Wo want the money up before wo send a teacher down. The board bad had experience of sending a teacher on a guarantee' and it had never been paid yet. —Tho application was agreed to. The, Head Master of the Strath Taieri School asked that an arrangement be made for the conveyance by motor of tho children from Gladbronk Settlement (nine at present, 10 others approaching school ago; distances ranging from 24 to . miles), ■prices of motor carriage, would bo submitted later. Seven children at present would earn capitation, amount 17s 6d per week.— I The committee to bo asked for information as to the cost of conveying the children. The appointment of Mr James Smith as school commissioner at Moonlight, to act with Mr Clark, was approved.

The senior inspector was instructed to report on an application from Ngnpara for increased accommodation at the school. The architect submitted a plan providing for an additional classroom; estimated cost (exclusive of furniture), £4lO.
