A PERILOUS EXPERIENCE

CYCLONE ENCOUNTERED. DISASTER NARROWLY AVERTED. Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, June Id. The sailing vessel Sandvigen, which' left Sydney on June 10, towed by the steamer St. Vincent De Paul, bound for Noumea, experienced the full force of the cyclone which swept the Tasman Sea last week, and both vessels narrowly escaped disaster. They have returned to port. The Sandvigen’s main hatch was continually awash. Twenty-two men who were on board had a, desperate struggle at the pumps to keep the vessel afloat. Amidships, on the port deck, securely tied down in a cradle, was a steam tug for use in Noumea Harbour. At the height of the storm this was washed clean pverboard, carrying with it 40ft of steel bulwarks. The main deck was broken in four places, and through these holes the water poured into the ship. Temporary repairs were effected, and it was decided- to return. The Sandvigeh had 4ft of water in her holds on her arrival.
