AMERICAN PRESIDENCY

A DEMOCRATIC PARTY. WIDE RANGE OF '‘POSSIBLES.” Pr«a» Association — By Telegraph—Copyright. NEW IORK, June 17. (Received Juno 18, at 10 p.m.) The Democratic Convention which is a week away, promises to offer a veritable battle between the political giants of the party and the States, which was obviously lacking at Cleveland, where Mr Goolidge’s influence was omnipotent. Aspirants for Democratic presidential honour are in the following order of importance: —Mr M'Adoo, Governor Smith (New York), Senator Ralston, Senator Underwood, ex-Am-bassadoi Davis, Senator Glass, Governor Silzer (New Jersey), ex-Governor Cox (Oljio), ox-Vice-President Marshall, Mr Homer Cummings (temporary chairman of the Democratic Convention in 1920), and M. Vance M'Cormick (manager of Mr Woodrow Wilson’s 1916 campaign). It would not bo surprising, however, if a practically unknown ligure rose triumphant as a compromise candidate, following a prolonged conflict among the major aspirants. This is especially likely since a 203 majority of delegates is required for a choice. Mr M’Adoo’s forces are determined to institute the simple majority practice, but they are unlikely to succeed. The party leaders are making strenuous efforts to avoid schism in the convention, leading to a lasting breach between factions, for perfervid enthusiasms arc expected to reign and deep differences of opinion are already in evidence. —A. and N. Cable.
