BOWLING.

By Jack.

Bowlers are now beginning to make preparations for next season, and the majority of the annual meetings will be held this month and next month. Roslyn leads the way, that club’s forty-first annual meetingbeing held to-night. The club’s membership now stands at 72 (69 ordinary and throe life members, exclusive of the ladies’ | section, which has a membership of 28)., The Roslyn Club’s green was one of the best in the Centre last season, thanks to the skill and energy of the greenkeeper (Mr T. ■Walsh), and on several occasions it waa utilised by the Centre for important fixtures. In the inter-club competition the Roslyn Club had a very sasicfactory record, winning nine and losing six games. In the fqur-riuk championship games it waa hardly so successful, winning two and losing four games. Tne singles championship was again won by Mr D. Campbell, whose performances in singles games must go close to establishing a New Zealand record, and Mr Campbell followed up his club success by winning the blue riband of the local bowling world—the singles champion of champions contest. The following dub ties were played off during the season: Doubles, champion singles, handicap singles, and junior cup. In addition to these Mr A. Alcock presented a handsome cup called the “Rooster Cup’’ for a singles competition. Owing partly to the fine weather during the season and partly to the prompt manner in which the members played their matches, an extra competition for doubles was arranged, called the Topsy-turvy Doubles, and all those competitions were concluded satisfactorily by the end of the season. The following are the winners of the various club ties: —Champion Singles: Messrs D. Campbell 1, C, Anderson 2. Handicap Singles: Messrs R. Todd 1, L. M'Leau 2. Doubles: Messrs H. Harper and J. Hariraway 1, Messrs J. Randle and A. W. Moodic 2. Junior Cup: Mr J. Johnstone 1. Rooster Cup: Mr D. Campbell l, C. Dickson 2. Topsy-turvy Doubles; Messrs D. O’Connell and P. Merchant 1, Messrs H. Armitage and W. Morrison 2. j The social side of the club has not been neglected. The convener of the Social Committee reports that the interest in the winter gatherings is keenly maintained. During the last season the oliib suffered the loss by death of two members, Messrs W. Macandrew and H. Mitchell. In tire billiard tournament for members of bowling clubs the Henaghan banner was won by the Roslyn Club. The lady members of the St. Kilda Club held their second social on Thursday night hist, and in spite of the unfavourable weather the attendance was very satisfactory. A very pleasant time was spent in song and story, and card games were also, indulged in, the winners being Mrs M‘Dermott and Miss Whibton. and Messrs D, Duncan and H. Harris. A start, was made with the Henaghan banner competition last week, St. Kilda defeating North-East Valley and Roslyn defeating Caledonian. Following are the detailed scores:— North-East Valley v. Kaikorai won from St. Clair There are three well-known gi-rras in New Zealand that owe their great reputation to the fact that they have no grass on them, but are entirely covered by a weed (writes “Trundler” in the Auckland Star). Hi ere is the Westport green, which the New South Wales visitors last summer declared the best in the dominion. U grows a strong variety of water-weed, and is so poms that they began a tournament at 9 o’clock one morning, after four nr five inches of rain had fallen during the night. The green at Tauranga is very similar, and visitors to the Rotorua tournament last February were amazed when they got to Tauranga the following week, and saw such n green sward after scorching dry weather. The (Jnehunga weed needs no description, as all Auckland bowlers know that it has been the making of the winter green, of which it takes complete possession, only to give way to ordinary grass in the spring. It does not necessarily follow that any of these weeds would suit every green, but after the experience of three in New Zealand, and a host of them in Australia, it looks is if wo were not yet exploited the possibilities of cultivating something a little more robust tha.li cither brown-top or Chewing’s fescue, the two most popular varieties used here. It would” probably be found that the soils vary so much that the variety that would grow well in one place will not. suit another. There is another green which can be added to “Trundler’s” list—the North End green at Invercargill. This green is practically wholly covered with weed, and it presents an excellent playing surface—in tact in wet weather, when other greens are unplayable, this green plays remarkably well. The green at Queenstown is also largely composed of weed. The Caledonian Club’s annual meeting will be held on the 28th of this month. The fourth annual meeting of the ladies* section of the North-East Valley Bowling Club was held in the pavilion laH week) about 20 members being presen.'. The annual report and balance sheet were reau, and on the motion of Mrs Chapman) seconded by Mrs Bennett, were adopted. Several members spoke congratulating the club on the prosperous year, and expressing the pleasure they had felt in the games played during the season. It was, mentioned that the ladies had already handed £l2 10s to the men’s club, and, after some discussioh, it was decided to make a further donation. The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing season :—Prosident, Mrs Bennett: vice-presidents, Mcs dame s ■ Chapman and Colbert; treasurer. Miss Gray (re-elected); secretary, Mrs Duncan (re-elected); committee—Mesdamaa Lawson, Roycroft, and White. The retiring president (Mrs Rigby) thanked all the members for their loyal support during her term of office. Mrs Bennett thanked the members for the honour conferred upon her. On the motion of Mrs Lawson, a hearty vote of tbank s was tendered the retiring office-bearers for their services.
