UNIVERSITY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Otago University Council, held yesterday afternoon, was attended by the Chancellor, the Rev. Dr Cameron (in the chair), Mr T. K. Bidey, M.P., Sir 11. Limlo Ferguson, Dr» W. Marshall Macdonald and J. .Fitzgerald, Professor Benham. Messrs J Rennie. J, W. Scurr, .1. <J. Thomson, M.P., J. Wallace, L. L>. Ritchie, .1, C. Stephens, W. J. Morrell, and J. S. Douglas 'J'he Director of Education advised that Dr Fitzgerald had been reappointed to a seat on the council by his Excellency the Governor-General. The town clerk not; lied that UT J. S. Douglas had been re unpointed to represent the City Council The secretary, Otago Education Board, notified the reappointment of Mr ■<. Wallace. The registrar stated that he had received advice that Mr J C Stephens had been'nominated by the Waitaki. Otago. Southland, and Gore High School Boards. Mr W. Eudey, who is retiring from a seat on the council after 12 years’ serviot wrote a letter of farewell to the council. It had been a great privilege to work with gentlemen who had been so wholehearted in their devotion to the University. In the registrar, Mr Chapman, the University bad been most, fortunate in having the services of a gentleman of such marker! ability to manage its affairs. —The chan cellor expressed the council's great appreciation of t.he fidelity with which Mr Eudey had sought to serve the interests of the University. The chancellor and vicechancellor were appointed to draw up a suitable letter to Mr Eudey and a minute of appreciation of his services. Messrs Thomson and Sidey, M.P.'s, were granted leave of absence during the forthcoming session of Parliament. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr W. Thomas wrote accepting the award of the Sir Robert Stout Scholar ship.—Received. The secretary of the Tutorial Classes Committee of the Workers’ Educational Association recommended the following appointment of tutors: —Mr L. S. O’Suliivau. Winton : Mr E. Lopdell, Invercargill; Mr S. 'G. August, Invercargill, Centre Bush Winton, Bluff. Waianawa. —The recommendations were agreed to. Tiie Director ol Education wrote statin; that* the department had now' approver' of the, graining of a home science bursar,' to Miss A. Borrie.—Received. Mr J. D. Sahnond, president of the Uni versity Christian Union, wrote applying for the use of one of the upstairs roomill the Mahcno and Mamma Hall for tin union. Mr J. A. Paterson, assistant secre tary of the Students’ Association, wrote supporting the request, and expressing the view' that such a room was urgently needed and would be well cared fcr.—lt was de cided to grant the request. Mrs 1,. M. Williams, Battleford. Saskatchewan, wrote forwarding a lone letter concerning the institution of a uniform marriage law.-- Amid considerable laughter the letter was referred, on the motion of the Chancellor, to Messrs T. K Sidey and J. C. Stephens.—A suggestion bv Mr Stephens that it be referred to the (Medical Committee we-- • ’- I out of order WORKS COMMITTEE’S REPORT. The Works Committee reported that it had considered the nWRr of heating np Mahcno and Marama Hall, reported by Dr Piekerill to be very cold for the treatment of patients.—lt was resolved that the chancellor, the chairman of the Works Committee. and the chairman of the Finance Committee should confer with the nrchiloc' and act. The committee had considered the question of renovating t.he fence between the professors’ houses and the Uni versitv grounds, and had resolved that alternative prices bo obtained for a fence of cyclone netting and a fence of steen netting between Professor Thompson’? garden and the University grounds, and also between the janitor’s garden and ibr University grounds. The committee had approved of a proposal from Mr Anscombe to dispose of spoil from the Medical School site to the Harbour Board at. Is per load.—Adopted. FINANCE AND MEDICAL COMMITTEES . The Finance and Medical Committees reported that they had considered the matter of the appointment of a professor of surgery, and in this connection had before them a letter from the Hospital Board and a letter from Dr Barnett addressed to the chairman of the Medical Committee. The committee had resolved as follows: —(a) To assure the Hospital Board that the board will be fully consulted, through representatives, before the appointment of a professor is, made: tl-, to adopt the wording suggested by the medical superintendent in respect of clause 6 of the conditions of appointment; (c) to inform the Hospital Board that, the matter of the appointment of an additional house surgeon is deferred until the necessity for consideration arises; (d) to authorise the registrar to advertise the vacancy in accordance with the conditions agreed unon. Tne chairman of the committee and the chancellor were associated with him in taking ali the necessary steps for calling applications.- - Adopted. ETNANCE C() MMITTKK. The Finance Committee reported that the question of the installation of fire prevention appliances at the Museum had been deferred. 'The committee had considered a report, from Dr Drennan as to the necessity for the appointment of a chemical assistant in his depaitmont, and had resolved that (he position he advertised at a salary of £IOO for the first, year, rising to £l5O per annum in the second year.—Adopted. MEDICAL COMMITTEE. The Medical Committee reported that, it had considered a letter drafted by Mr Sidey and the chairman (Dr Fitzgerald) which it was proposed to send to the minister- of Education, in response to the evidence submitted to the Committee of Inquiry concerning the Dental School. The letter was slightly amended, and the council was recommended to forward it in its amended form.—The report was adopted, and it was decided to thank Mr Sidey and Dr Fitzgerald for their valuable report. GENERAL. Increases in the salaries of the teaching stall', aggregating £7lO 10s. were agreed to. Two applications were received for the position of chemical assistant in the pathology department, and it was decided to appoint Mr L. R. 1,. Dunn, M.Se. Dr Holloway forwarded n report on a garden area at the back of the Museum, and suggested the best way of utilising it in connection with the botany laboratory.— The report wa s referred to the Works Committee. On the recommendation of the Faculty ef Medicine it was decided to appoint Mr T. H. Fra.ser as demonstrator in practical pharmacy at, a remuneration of £lO, and Mr R. E. Bevan-Brown demonstrator in bacteriology at, a remuneration of £5.
