AMERICAN PRESIDENCY

THE DEMOCRATIC CAMPAIGN. PROBABLE CANDIDATES MENTIONED. Press Asaociation— By Telegraph— Copyright. NEW YORK, June 16. (Received June 7, at 8.5 p.m.) The democratic leaders arrived hero to-day to prepare for a week of political manoeuvring prior to the National Convention. Looming in the forefront as possible “dark horse” or compromise candidates for the Presidency are Mr John Davis, former Ambassador to Britain, _ and Senator Ralston, of Indiana. Sentiment favouring the choice of Mr Davis in the event of a deadlock in the Convention is reported to be gi owing swiftly. _ The supporters of Ijovernor Smitn, oi New York, and Mr William M'Adoo are active. —Reuter. FARMER-LABOUR PARTY. LIKELY TO COMPLICATE THE ISSUES. NEW YORK, Juno 16. (Received June 17, at 9.26 p.m.) A telegram from St.Paul (Minnesota) says Unit tho Farmer-Labour party convention will open tu-morrow. It is apparently determined to designate or endorse a candidate for the United States Presidency who has already dctinilely repudiated the party itself—namely, Senator La toilette, who declared that the organisation was deeply tainted with Butsucvism. Senator La Toilette luifs his own plans —namely, probably launching a third party during the so-called Progressive National Convention at Cleveland on July 4. It is understood that in the event of Senator La Toilette not being designated the Farmer-Labourites will name Mr Parley Christensen, who was the party s candidate in 1920. Tho American Federation of Labour has long repudiated the Farmer-Labourites, whose membership includes every variety radical, especially tho r.Vv.W., but its importance lies in the fact that these various so-called third parties inevitably mean a weakening of the Republican and oven Democratic strength, thus increasing tho possibility that no party will secure a majority of the Electoral College, and putting tlie choice of President upon Congress.—A. and N.Z.Cable.
