ILLUSTRATED LECTURE ON KIPLING.
P.udyard Kipling must have many admirers in Dunedin, judging by the size of the audience that assembled in the Allen Hall, Otago University, last evening to hear Dr D. W. Carmalt Jones lecture upon Kipling’s poems. The lecture was given under the auspices of the New Zetland Federation of University Women, and was in aid of the Crosby Hall fund.
The lecturer asked them to consider Kipling's works during various periods of hia career. Kipling had first worked aa a journalist and throughout his early work there could be traced parodies modelled on Browning’s writings. The speaker compared the similarity between the two, and said these parodies were a pretty clear evidence as to the source that had inspired Kipling's early writing. Kipling’s work at that stage had been full of literary references. Dr Carmalt Jones then referred to the periods of 1870, 1800, and the development that took place later on in Kipling’s writing, and mentioned Kipling’s capacity for creating "pictures” giving numerous illustrations of Indian. South African, and English picture drawing. He also dealt with the romancing nature of some of Kipling’s later works, all his recitals of Kipling’s poems being followed by applause. At the conclusion of the recital Mrs Benson said they were very grateful to Dr Carmalt Jones for His interesting lebture, and explained that Crosby Hall was a beautiful old building in Lono'on, which it was desired should be acquired for the use of travelling students for research purposes. New Zealand hoped to contribute £4OO towards the purchase of the fine old mansion. She moved a hearty vote of thanks to Dr Carmalt Jones for his interesting address the proposal being carried by acclamation.
