BURGLARS IN THE NORTH

SAEE BLOWN OPEN. A RAILWAY STATION ROSOED. SMART ARREST BY DETECTIVES. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 16. Burglars entered the offices of the Avondale railway station on Saturday night, blow open the safe with gelignite, and stole Saturday’s takings (about £SO), which were mostly in silver coin. The manner in which the explosive was used indicated that the burglars possessed some skill. The police later arrested a young man on a charge of burglary. It is stated that the police searched his room and found part of the stolen money. One half of the strong room door was blown off, Edmund Edwin Rodburne Luttrill, aged 35 years, was charged in the Police Court with breaking and entering the Avondale Railway Station and stealing therefrom £56 12s 4d, the property of the Government, Accused was remanded without hail. Detectives Cummings, Robertson, and Moon ascertained that accused was in possession of more money. than in ordinary circumstances. They found him sitting on his bed in an hotel. An examination made in his presence disclosed the rrossession of money, alleged to be part of that stolen and other identifiable property taken from the safe. Loose cartridges and a catalogue detailing the working of an electric burglar alarm system were also found on him. Mr Poynton, S.M., remarked that those responsible for the arrest were to be congratulated. AN UNSUCCESSFUL VENTURE. OPERATIONS IN PALMERSTON NORTH. (Per United Press Association.) PALMERSTON NORTH, June 16. An unsuccessful attempt was made last night to blow open the safe in the office ot the local bacon company. The lock was damaged, but not forced. The safe contained no money, the proceeds being banked on Saturday.
