THE HONOLULU MARU
HEARING OF SALVAGE CLAIM.. Press Association —By Telegraph—-Copyright. SYDNEY, June 16. (Received June 16, at 9.5 a.m.) The hearing has been commenced of a claim against the owners of the Honolulu M-a.ru. It was stated in evidence that the value of the Japanese steamer was £87,000, and the owners of the tug Champion claimed 10 per cent, of this value. The question for the Court to decide was the amount of salvage to be paid, as the salvage of the vessel was not disputed. Early in April a wireless message was received in Sydney from the Honolulu Maru asking for assistance, and stating that the vessel had developed a dangerous list. H.M.S. Dauntlss, of the Special Service Squadron, while on her way to Sydney for docking, picked, up the distress call, and proceeded at high speed to the assistance of the vessel. H.M.S. Dragon also answered the call. Finally the tug Champion, which had been despatched from Sydney, succeeded in getting a line on board the Honolulu Maru, and towed her safely into Sydney Harbour. The vessel passed through a perilous experience, and at one stage tha crew had abandoned all hope of being saved.
