HEALTH OF AUSTRALIANS
PREVALENCE OF VENEREAL DISEASE. PUBLICITY CAMPAIGN URGED. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE. June 16. (Received June 16, at 8 p.m.) In giving evidence before the Commission on National Insurance Sir James Barrett condemned the baby bonus as one of the worst acts which had ever been introduced. It had not increased the birth rate or decreased the death rate. The money would be much better spent on maternity institutions. Referring to the prevalence of venereal disease he said that of every 100 deaths at the Melbourne Hospital 30 were syphilitic. Quite 10 per cent, of the expectant mothers were affected with the disease. He urged that the remedy was early marriage and more complete education” on the disease by wide publicity.
